A senior suspect, detained shortly after the shooting of Charlie Kirk and then released, sought to aid the prime suspect flee by faking a confession, law enforcement confirm.

Local sheriff Michael Smith said that the individual admitted to police that he had "exclaimed that he was the shooter to allow the true gunman get away".

The key person in the assassination is 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who reportedly noted Mr Zinn's first apprehension after the incident, texting his housemate via message that the police "arrested some eccentric elderly man."

Mr Zinn is facing charges on interfering with law enforcement charges. Separately, he has been indicted with having inappropriate content.

George Zinn was among several individuals that authorities questioned for interrogation after political activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University on 10 September.

Police later determined that the two suspects were were uninvolved in the shooting.

Mr Zinn "purposefully exclaimed he was the shooter and by doing so, obstructed Law Enforcement from focusing on the real gunman", the sheriff announced in a statement.

Court documents provided by campus police state that Mr Zinn began exclaiming: "I shot him - now shoot me."

When questioned by police where the weapon involved in the shooting was hidden, he reportedly answered: "That information remains with me", per the documents.

The sheriff emphasized that there was so far no indication Mr Zinn worked alongside the gunman.

Other Allegations

Sheriff Smith further stated that Mr Zinn is additionally detained for the abuse involving a child, and that agents found more than 20 images of children "showing inappropriate exposure and exploitative postures."

On Monday, a magistrate decided that Mr Zinn be held without bail, labeling him a "significant risk" to the community.

It was not clear from official files if he retained counsel.

Mr Zinn is well known among organizers of gatherings in the region. "He often attended at public forums with the intention to disrupt the event or target a well-known individual", accounts indicate.
