Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to question particular calls from the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
